N.B. When Conrad Kickert was a young artist he stayed in Paris for a while, where he got to know painters like Picasso and Braque. Back in the Netherlands he started the 'Moderne Kunstkring', where he exhibited their French Cubist paintings for the first time in Holland. The influence of the cubist-style with its monochrome, brownish colours can be seen in this still life.

Johan Conrad Theodoor Kickert tot den Egmond nasceu em Haia em novembro de 1882 e morreu em Paris em 26 de junho de 1965. Pintor autodidata, Kickert foi para Domburg, junto com Jan Toorop, e em Bergen. Ele foi um dos primeiros artistas a trabalhar no estilo cubista. Em 1910, ele fundou com Piet Mondriaan, Jan Sluyters e Jan Toorop, o Moderne Kunstkring, defendendo a arte de vanguarda. Entre 1912 e 1913, eles organizaram várias exposições no Museu Stedelijk. Em 1912 Kickert mudou-se para Paris, onde viveu em um estúdio em Montparnasse. Kickert circulou por prestigiosas sociedades de arte e expôs com pintores como Georges Braque, Raoul Dufy, Henri Matisse, Maurice Utrillo, Kees van Dongen e Maurice Vlaminck. Durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial, ele voltou para a Holanda, mas em 1919 ele se estabeleceu definitivamente na França. No entanto, ele visitava com frequência a Holanda. Na década de 1920, Kickert começou a adotar um estilo mais naturalista. Entre seus temas estavam figuras, paisagens e naturezas mortas. Embora tenha tido sucesso na França, Kickert caiu no esquecimento em sua terra natal. Seu trabalho está incluído no Gemeentemuseum Den Haag.
