- About the artist
Jean-François Debongnie is a contemporary Belgian artist, born in Brussels, who has been based in Singapore since 1989. He is known for his expressive paintings that focus on nature and organic forms. Self-taught, Debongnie has developed a unique style, with a preference for large canvases on which he explores his inspiration in thematic series such as Red Flowers, Summer, Dancing in the Wind and Chinese Landscape.
In these series, he brings flowers to life, not as botanically correct representations, but as iconic floral elements that capture the essence of a flower. Often these flowers are part of a landscape, where they grow wild among ripening grain. His works breathe movement, with wind blowing through fields under a swirling sky in a deep blue hue.
Debongnie uses a palette of warm summer tones such as ochre, Naples yellow, raw umber and burnt sienna, which creates a timeless atmosphere. The addition of Chinese ink gives his works a dramatic fluidity. In the Summer series, a horizon leads the eye to a turbulent cloud cover above a ripening field, in which an approaching storm becomes palpable.
In other series, such as White Flowers and Chinese Landscape, he opts for a more subdued palette of greys, chalk whites and creams. These monochrome works, which often tend towards abstraction, explore diverse landscapes and play with the contrast and harmony between paint and ink.
Jean-François Debongnie’s paintings have been internationally acclaimed for their dynamism, refinement and timeless beauty.
