  First five parts of a description of the plants of the Arabian Peninsula; here with the preliminaries and original wrappers of each part, written by Ethelbert Blatter (1877-1934). The scientific plant names are given in Latin, Arabic, Persian as well as in regional dialects. The aim was to give a history of the botanical exploration of Arabia and a general sketch of the vegetation. A sixth part appeared posthumously.

VIII; the organisation established in 1890 for the purpose of identifying plant species India, and of establishing their economic value. Flora Arabica was a key work of reference on Arabian vegetation well into the 20th century.

  Ethelbert Blatter (15 dicembre 1877 – 26 maggio 1934) è stato un sacerdote gesuita svizzero e botanico pioniere nell'India britannica. Blatter è nato nel cantone di Appenzello Interno in Svizzera. Blatter frequentò il liceo a Svitto e in seguito si trasferì nella città di confine di Feldkirch in Austria, unendosi ai gesuiti. Blatter andò nei Paesi Bassi nel 1898, studiando classici e filosofia. Ha inoltre sviluppato interesse per la botanica e ha partecipato a conferenze scientifiche in Europa. Blatter si trasferì in India nel 1903, dove fu nominato professore di botanica al St. Xavier's College di Bombay. Ha viaggiato molto attraverso l'India e ha scritto un'importante serie di articoli tra il 1904 e il 1909, dal titolo The Palms of British India and Ceylon, Indigenous and Introduced. Nel 1909 Blatter tornò in Europa, completando i suoi studi teologici a Hastings, nel sud dell'Inghilterra. Ordinato sacerdote nel 1912, Blatter visse un anno nei Paesi Bassi, prima di tornare a Londra. Quando scoppiò la Grande Guerra (1914-1919), Blatter si trasferì da Londra in India, arrivando a Bombay nell'ottobre 1915. Come professore di botanica a St Xavier, Blatter costruì una vasta collezione botanica. Nel 1925 Blatter si ritirò e iniziò a concentrarsi maggiormente sui suoi studi botanici. Scrisse tra gli altri Some Beautiful Indian Trees (1925), Beautiful Flowers of Kashmir (1927, 1928) e The Ferns of Bombay (1932). Dopo una brutta caduta da cavallo nel 1930, la sua salute cominciò a peggiorare. Nel 1932 Blatter ricevette la prima Johannes Bruehl Memorial Medal della Società Asiatica del Bengala per "Cospicui importanti contributi alla conoscenza della botanica asiatica". Blatter morì il 26 maggio 1934 alla St. Vincent's High School di Pune
