    'Personal Structures Art Projects' are projects created by Rene Rietmeyer and executed by Karlyn De Jongh and Sarah Gold in close cooperation with each artist, and which are documented as special edition Artists' Books. Each project centralises the artist and emphasises their work.

    Yoko Ono, nata nel 1933 in Giappone, è un'artista poliedrica nota per i suoi contributi come musicista, compositrice e artista multimediale, con attività significativa in Giappone, Stati Uniti e Regno Unito. Il trasferimento della sua famiglia da Tokyo a Scarsdale, New York, all'inizio degli anni '50 segnò l'inizio del suo viaggio nelle arti, portandola a frequentare il Sarah Lawrence College. Nel 1955, la vita di Ono prese una svolta drammatica quando fuggì con il compositore Toshi Ichiyanagi, ponendo le basi per il suo trasferimento a Manhattan. Lì, si è immersa nella scena artistica d'avanguardia, creando legami con artisti che la pensano allo stesso modo.

    Gli anni '60 videro Ono emergere come figura pionieristica nel movimento Fluxus, un collettivo internazionale che abbracciava una miscela di diversi mezzi e discipline artistiche. È diventata nota per la sua performance artistica innovativa, ospitando eventi nel suo appartamento in centro e mostrando il suo lavoro in luoghi importanti come la Carnegie Recital Hall e la AG Gallery. Il ritorno a Tokyo nel 1962 le permise di approfondire i suoi sforzi artistici con mostre personali e concerti al Sogetsu Art Center.     Una delle opere più provocatorie e di grande impatto di Ono, "Cut Piece", ha debuttato nel 1964. Questa performance artistica, in cui invitava il pubblico a tagliarsi i vestiti, rappresenta un'opera fondamentale nel movimento artistico femminista, evidenziando temi di vulnerabilità, fiducia e l’oggettivazione delle donne. L'arte di Ono spesso sfida gli spettatori a diventare partecipanti attivi, un segno distintivo del suo approccio concettuale.

    Nel 1966, il trasferimento di Ono a Londra portò a un incontro fortuito con John Lennon in occasione della sua mostra alla Indica Gallery, dando vita a una partnership leggendaria che fondeva il personale con il professionale. Le loro collaborazioni, tra cui il famoso Bed-Ins for peace nel 1969, hanno dimostrato il loro impegno nell’utilizzare la loro piattaforma per l’attivismo sociale e politico. La sinergia creativa della coppia continuò fino alla tragica morte di Lennon nel 1980.

    L'eredità artistica di Yoko Ono va oltre le sue collaborazioni con Lennon.
