    This still-life was painted in the early years of Van Stolk's career. The artist, born in 1830 turned 17 in the year that the panel was painted. In this work she seems to have gathered several props from her workshop, with a paint-stained large folder against the back wall. By combining objects with different material qualities, she seems to have tried her hand at textural expression.

    Dit stilleven werd in de vroege jaren van de carrière van Van Stolk geschilderd. De kunstenaar, geboren in 1830, werd 17 in het jaar dat ze dit paneeltje schilderde. In dit werk lijkt ze attributen uit haar werkplaats te hebben verzameld, met onder meer een grote portfoliomap tegen de achtermuur. Door objecten met verschillende materiaaleigenschappen te schilderen, lijkt het stilleven een oefening in stofuitdrukking te zijn.
