About the artist

Fiona Zondervan (Haarlem, 1963) is a Dutch sculptor. She specializes in making statues of animals in bronze and stone. She lives and works in Groningen, and has a studio in Den Horn. She makes sculptures of animals in stone and bronze and 3D print. She also designs tokens.

Zondervan was born in Haarlem. She studied for six months at the Art Academy in Kampen, but sees herself mainly as self-taught. When she started using animals as models, Artis became her favorite workplace. Sculptors of animal statues, the animaliers such as Rembrandt Bugatti, Jaap Kaas, François Pompon and Hetty Heyster inspired her. She was Heyster's assistant for a time.

She started sculpting statues and having them cast in bronze, and worked in different types of stone. She also works in 3D printing and mainly uses recycled plastic.

Her motto is: Animals are my models. Bronze and stone are the materials I work in. Movement, texture and natural form are my basic ingredients.
