- About the artwork
A mother with child, a classic theme. Yet it is very clever how the artist manages to convey the intimacy and love that the mother feels for her child. The mother's downcast eyes, her big hand, she flatters the child against her face and hugs it. A moving bronze, André Belo is the French sculptor who made this bronze, it is probably a work from the 1950s. Condition: Excellent, the pedestal is not original. The work is signed on the back with 'Belo'.
- About the artist
André Belo (André Belol Dil), Paris, 1908-1976, developed an interest in sculpture at an early age, seeing it as his vocation. At the Academy he was a student of Jean Boucher and Aristide Maillol. Later he also taught at the École des Arts Appliques and was a member of the admissions committee at the École des Beaux-Arts.
In addition to his sculptures and bas-reliefs, he has also designed special medals for Erik Satie and Charles Dullin. He exhibited at the Salon de la Jeune Sculpture from 1945 to the early 1970s.
André Belo is known for his modern lines, bordering on figuration, surrealism and abstraction. He has a beautiful way of designing, he was inspired by artists such as Laurens and Brancusi.
The major theme of his oeuvre is man, and in particular woman, in all her dimensions, as in this small bronze, in which the woman can be seen as a mother. The mother's love is so clearly and beautifully displayed.
He has also portrayed some animals, such as his fire bird, a bronze version of which is included in the collection of the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
