    Each signed, dated, and annotated À la Guadeloupe, Savart invt 3 mars 1769 and titled respectively ‘la Négresse’, ‘la Mestisse’, ‘la Cabresse’, and ‘la Mulatresse’ on the backing

    One drawing has a label reading BULDET - Rue de Gesvie au grand Coeur - Vend les vraix Verres de glace blanc, Estampes, Bordures de toute facons. A PARIS on the backing

    Private collection, Belgium (at least since the mid-19th century); thence by descent
    Included is a letter from the Louvre to the ancestor of the previous owner, dated August 8th 1929, in which is stated that the Louvre, nor the Cabinet d’Etampes in Brussels, are aware of an artist named Favart. The owner of the drawings, Mr. Brisque, misread the signature and made a wrong enquiry.

    Joseph Savart, nato nel 1735 a Reims e morto il 25 ottobre 1801 a Saint-Pierre (Martinica), è un pittore francese.

    Marie Joseph Hyacinthe Savart nacque nel 1735 a Reims da Maître Pierre Savart, procuratore del Baliato di Reims, e Catherine Husson. Si stabilì in Guadalupa e sposò Christine Élisabeth Rison, vedova di un tessitore a Basse-Terre, il 22 ottobre 1765.

    Dipinge in particolare il pastello Quatre Femmes Creoles, datato 17 novembre 1770, l'unica sua opera conservata, apparsa sul mercato dell'arte nel 2009. Quest'opera è stata acquistata con l'aiuto dello Stato dal Consiglio Generale della Guadalupa per arricchire le collezioni del museo dipartimentale Victor-Schoelcher di Pointe-à-Pitre.

    Durante gli anni Settanta del Settecento Savart si stabilì in Martinica, ma durante il periodo rivoluzionario dovette lasciare l'isola per la Dominica per sfuggire ai controrivoluzionari. Ritornò in Martinica e lì morì a Saint-Pierre il 25 ottobre 1801.

    Secondo Séverine Laborie, la freschezza degli abiti, la finezza dei tessuti e i set di gioielli in oro delle Quattro donne creole, rappresentate fianco a fianco nonostante i diversi colori della pelle, costituiscono una sfida a una società basata sul pregiudizio cromatico. Quest'opera può essere vista come un manifesto repubblicano per l'uguaglianza dei popoli, che annuncia le azioni del pittore al tempo della Rivoluzione francese.
