Tilson was born on August 24, 1928 in London. He served in the Royal Air Force between 1946-49, after which he applied to the St Marin’s School of Art in London (1949-52) and the Royal College of Art (1952-55).
During the 1960s Tilson became strongly associated with the upcoming British Pop Art movement. He first produced wooden reliefs and constructions, prints and paintings, but he later began to use a wider variety of materials such as stone, straw and rope.
