  Oscar Verpoorten was a Belgian painter, sculptor and graphic artist. He was the son of a goldsmith and student of the Antwerp Art Academy (among others with Frans Lauwers and Charles Mertens). Became a teacher at the Academy of Berchem in 1935. Verpoorten painted figuratively: city corners, harbor views, marines, landscapes, figures and portraits. His style was post-impressionistic. He can be counted among traditionally working Antwerp painters from the first half of the 20th century, such as Franck Mortelmans, John Michaux, Isidoor Opsomer, Jos Tilleux, René Leclercq, Antoon Marstboom and Georges Van Raemdonck. Typical of a large part of his oeuvre is the use of monotone earth colors in performances in which he then illuminates certain parts. Light and color are more emphatically present in other works.

  Oscar Verpoorten (1895, Anversa – 1948, Anversa) è stato un pittore e incisore fiammingo post-impressionista. Era figlio di un orafo. È stato addestrato all'arte dell'incisione da Frans Lauwers e Charles Mertens presso la Royal Academy of Fine Arts di Anversa. Come pittore era autodidatta. Dopo una mostra di successo dei suoi dipinti da parte della società di artisti "Als ik kan" (Se posso) nel 1928, si dedicò completamente alla pittura. I suoi soggetti erano vedute del porto (ad Anversa, Lillo, Rupelmonde, Willemstad), marine, paesaggi urbani, paesaggi fluviali (la Schelda era il suo fiume preferito), ritratti, figure e nature morte. Nel 1935 divenne insegnante dell'Accademia di Berchem (Belgio). Nel 1939 fu cofondatore e poi presidente del club d'arte 't Getij (la marea) e fu membro del Moderne Kunst (Arte moderna), un circolo di artisti di spicco, fondato nel 1927. Dopo la guerra mondiale Io, si stabilì nelle vicinanze di Anversa. Le sue opere sono incluse nel "Koninklijk Instituut voor het Kunstpatrimonium" (Royal Institute for Heritage of Art) e nel "Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten" (Royal Museum of Fine Arts) ad Anversa.
