Edward Antoon Portielje, a Belgian painter, born in Antwerp in an artist family. He was taught at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Antwerp by Charles Verlat. As impressionism grew stronger, Portielje continued to paint in a realistic way. He often chose genre scenes and anecdotal subjects from society, but also made this particularly beautiful beach scene, the return of fishing.
