- About the artist
Modest Huys was a Flemish Impressionist and Luminist painter. He worked in his father’s painting and decorating business from a young age and in 1900 enrolled at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp. From 1905, he participated in the exhibitions of Vie et Lumière, a luminist group, mainly painting landscapes. After the First World War, he painted scenes of the devastation at the front. His work was exhibited at the Paris Salon. During this period, his colours became darker and the contrasts harsher, approaching Expressionism. He died in 1932 in Zulte, where he had built his ideal home-studio, the Zonnehuys, in 1926.
