The farmyard painted by Charles Boland is atypical for his oeuvre. He mostly painted animal scenes, in line with artists like Henriette Ronner-Knip. This scene depicts a farmyard in a hilly landscape, with great attention to the effect of the raking sunlight coming in from the right. Throughout the painting he used a loose touch, suggestively applying paint.

Dit boerenerf van Charles Boland is atypisch voor het werk van Boland. Hij schilderde voornamelijk dieren, in lijn met schilderijen van kunstenaars als Henriëtte Ronner-Knip. He received his artistic training at the Academy of Antwerp, he took part in the “Prize of Rome” in 1878.
He was one of the co-founders on October 25, 1883 of the Antwerp association of visual artists Als ik Kan, of which Henry Van de Velde was also a member for a very short time.
