Cornelis Stroo (Amsterdam, 1860 – Hilversum, 1932) was a Dutch painter and draughtsman who specialized in landscapes, cityscapes and interiors, often with a tranquil atmosphere and a refined sense of detail. His work is rooted in the tradition of the Hague School, but also shows influences of Impressionism, especially in his loose brushwork and attention to the effects of light.

Stroo was born in Amsterdam and developed at a time when interest in the simple, rural life in art was flourishing. He worked in various parts of the Netherlands, but eventually settled in Hilversum, where he produced a significant part of his oeuvre. His paintings often show the still life of Dutch village and country life: farms under threatening skies, forest edges in soft backlight, or lonely cottages in the field.

His use of color is generally subdued — earth tones, greens and grays predominate — with which he evokes a calm, contemplative atmosphere. The same atmosphere is also visible in his interiors and cityscapes, in which he shows a preference for the everyday and the unaffected. Although Stroo was not an innovator, he excelled in technical mastery and a sense of atmosphere.

He regularly exhibited at exhibitions of artists' associations and his work was in demand among collectors who appreciated Dutch landscape art. Nowadays he is less well-known to the general public, but among connoisseurs his work is valued as an example of solid, atmospheric late 19th and early 20th century painting.

Cornelis Stroo leaves behind a consistent and harmonious oeuvre, in which Dutch nature and modest life are captured with dedication and craftsmanship.
