  • About the artist

Henricus Johannes (Harrie) Kuyten (Utrecht, December 19, 1883 – Schoorl, January 29, 1952) was a Dutch graphic artist, painter, draftsman, lithographer and woodcutter. Kuijten was a student of the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and received the Royal Subsidy for three years.

After years of traveling in different countries, Harrie Kuyten went to work in Amsterdam in 1914. His impressions from the previous years were expressed in a style in which impressionism and influences of the colorful French Fauvism were mixed. Subjects in this period were in addition to nudes, including his cityscapes. In 1921 Kuyten left the capital, after a stay in Austria, Hungary and Paris finally ended up in Schoorl.

His subjects include: trees, animals, figure representations, harbor views, interiors, cows, landscapes, nudes, city views, still lifes, beach and seascapes and self-portraits. He belonged to the group of the Bergen School.

He was a member of Arti et Amicitiae (Amsterdam) the Independents (Amsterdam), The Dutch Artist Circle (Amsterdam) and the KunstenaarsCentrumBergen (KCB).

His work can be found in private, corporate and government collections, as well as in the collection of the Museum Kranenburgh te Bergen NH and the National Collection.
