Simon Maris was a Dutch painter. He mainly became known as a portraitist. He was a tutor of his father Willem Maris, a well-known Dutch painter and the co-founder of the Hollandsche Teekenmaatschappij, and then went to the Akademie van Beeldende Kunsten (Academy of Fine Arts) in The Hague and Amsterdam and the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten (Royal Academy of Fine Arts) in Antwerp. He was a tutor of his father Willem Maris, a well-known Dutch painter and the co-founder of the Hollandsche Teekenmaatschappij, and then went to the Akademie van Beeldende Kunsten (Academy of Fine Arts) in The Hague and Amsterdam and the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten (Royal Academy of Fine Arts) in Antwerp. After that he lived in Brussels and travelled to Paris and Italy. In 1900 Maris settled in Amsterdam. In 1903 he travelled to Spain for a few months with his friend Piet Mondriaan. In the years after, he would regularly paint together with Mondriaan and in 1906 he drew Mondriaans portrait. Maris was a member of the artist association Vereeniging Sint Lucas in Amsterdam. As a portraitist, his portraits often were of mothers with their child or reading women. He often used his own wife and children as a model. Besides that he painted cityscapes, landscapes, beach scenes and still lives. He worked in both the realistic and impressionistic style. Maris was active from 1898 until his death in 1935. His work is to be found among others in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
